Each class or training session last approximately 90 minutes. The class begins with a formal bow-in, to pay respect to the founder, the system and ourselves.
After the bow in, is a 30-45 minute warm up session. The warm up starts by loosening the joints, then we go into the warm up exercises. These include basic techniques like punches, kicks, running, push ups and sit ups and even a quick game of Karate Soccer or Chikara Tip.
The final segment of the warm up session is the stretching of your muscles.
The warm up period is an essential segment of a training session as it reduces the risk of strains and sprains of muscles and ligaments. At first it may not be easy and you are only asked to do the exercises you are capable of. We do not expect a new student to keep up with an advanced student. However, you will be expected to apply yourself and work hard. Progress will come. It is determination that counts, and perseverance.
The balance of the session will vary from week to week, but basically it will be used to teach you the art of Chikara Shinai Ryu. You begin with:
The Basics - blocks, punches, kicks, evasions, stances and angles.
Self Defence - starting by evading a simple punch to evading multiple techniques from one person to multiple attacks from many people.
Bag Work - using focus mitts and kicking bags (shields) to practice and hone your skills with focus, power and stamina.
Sparring - controlled fighting using basic hands when you start to using your whole body, hands, legs, sweeps etc., as you progress.
Kata's & Kihons - set techniques in pre-arranged sequences.
At this point, we must tell you that you will be repeating the same moves over and over again.
Only by repeating and perfecting the moves will you make them instinctive.
At the end of each class is a formal bow out with question time. If you have any questions or comments on the class or training, please do not hesitate to speak up. We are here to teach!
Special Sparring Night: Three times through the year we have a special sparring night held in the Adult class on Tuesday nights only. We start the class with normal warm ups and stretching exercises. We then go straight into the sparring session of 15x 2 minute rounds. To end the class we cool down with loosening exercises and a small karate session.
15 rounds of sparring is a good work-out. It is an excellent chance to see what works and what doesn't, especially when your tired and being pushed.
